CAHPS Data Tools

AHRQ’s CAHPS Data Tools provide access to aggregated results for composite measures, rating measures, and individual survey items, organized according to survey version and year. The CAHPS Data Tools present data in four different ways:

• Overview: The number of respondents and health plans represented in the most recent surveys.
• Top Box Results: The percentage of survey respondents who chose the most positive score for a given item’s response scale.
• Percentiles: The percentage of health plans that scored at or below a particular top box score.
• Bar Charts: A graphical distribution of survey results that shows the top, bottom, and middle response categories.

CMS State-level CAHPS Health Plan Survey Results 

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and AHRQ are collaborating to streamline reporting of CAHPS Health Plan Survey data by utilizing the data voluntarily submitted to the CAHPS Database for both AHRQ reporting and CMS Core Set reporting. For the first time, the 2023 CMS Core Set data products posted on Medicaid.gov include state-level Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Child and Adult Core Set results, along with new summary tables with performance-related information about states’ Medicaid and CHIP managed care programs for 2023-2024.

• Adult Medicaid state level CAHPS scores (PDF, 237 KB) 
• Child Medicaid and CHIP state level CAHPS scores (PDF, 290 KB) 

The 2023 Core Set Fact Sheet (PDF, 402 KB) provides an overview of state reporting, highlights measures with high and low national median performance, and identifies trends in select measures over the last three years.

^2. The methods used to calculate the CMS state level CAHPS Health Plan Survey results are different than those used for the CAHPS Health Plan Database. The CMS state-level results are case mix adjusted and weighted based on health plan level scores while the CAHPS Health Plan Database results are unweighted and unadjusted individual-level scores.
