The Exhibit shows the annual number of each type of surgery done in the United States (vertical axis = y-axis), estimated from AHRQ Health Care Utilization Project (HCUP) data, mapped against the year (horizontal axis = x-axis) for 1993 through 2007. Coronary artery bypass grafts start around 300,000 annually in 1993, increase to close to 400,000 by 1997, and decline to 200,000 annually by 2007. Hernia repairs are done around 150,000 times annually in 1993, declining to close to 100,000 by 1997, and remain at that level until 2007. Total knee replacement surgeries are at slightly above 200,000 annually in 1993, increasing to 300,000 by 1997 and staying close to that level until 2001, at which point these surgeries increase steadily to just under 700,000 by 2007.In comparison, total hip replacement surgeries begin at around 250,000 annually in 1993, increase slowly to just above 300,000 annually in 2001, then increase to just above 400,000 annually by 2007.
