Jiajie Zhang, Ph.D., is dean, professor, and the Glassell Family Foundation Distinguished Chair in Informatics Excellence at UTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics.
Dr. Zhang is the former director of the National Center for Cognitive Informatics and Decision Making in Healthcare, and led the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (IT) Strategic Health IT Advanced Research project, which focused on enhancing patient-centered cognitive support in electronic health records and health IT. He has more than 30 years of research, education, volunteer leadership and service, product development, consulting, and management experience in biomedical and health informatics, cognitive science, human technology integration, usability and workflow, decision making, machine learning, and data science.
Early to recognize the importance of usability, design, and cognitive support in health IT, his career has centered on the use of data to improve healthcare quality and safety, advance biomedical discovery, create rigorous informatics education programs, and advocate for the power of informatics in healthcare.
Dr. Zhang is a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, the American Medical Informatics Association, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (FIAHSI). He has a B.S. degree in biology from the University of Science and Technology of China and a Ph.D. degree in cognitive science (the world’s first) from the University of California, San Diego.
