Text Description: The number of babies born each year with withdrawal symptoms from their mother’s drug dependence, known as neonatal abstinence syndrome, nearly doubled from 2008 to 2014, according to data from AHRQ’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. In 2016, more than 25,000 babies were born with withdrawal symptoms from drug dependence compared with more than 8,500 in 2008. These trends are taken from HCUP’s State Inpatient Databases, which are developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership sponsored by AHRQ.
