The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) offers practical, research-based tools and other resources to help a variety of health care organizations, providers and others make care safer in all health care settings.

Health insurance coverage of the U.S. population by person and family-level characteristics is collected through the MEPS Household Component. Job-based health insurance coverage offered by employers is collected through the MEPS Insurance Component.
The public sources for health insurance identified in the MEPS include Medicare, TRICARE, Medicaid, SCHIP, and other public hospital/physician coverage. In addition to the tables and publications provided below, data files with annual and monthly insurance indicators, experience with public plans, and more can be downloaded for further analyses.
The MEPS-Household Component collects some questions specific to men related to preventive care.
Perceived mental health status data are collected in the MEPS- Household Component.
The MEPS- Household Component provides information on the body mass index for both children and adults. Using this measure, analyses can be performed on obesity issues.
MEPS- Household Component survey participants are asked about their prescription drugs and then are asked for permission to collect more detailed information from their pharmacies. At the pharmacies, data are collected on the type, dosage, and payment for each filled prescription. No information is collected for over-the-counter medications. No information is collected for prescription drugs obtained during hospital visits.
Several quality of health care items are asked in the self-administered questionnaire of the MEPS- Household Component. Topics include experiences with getting an appointment, experiences at the appointment, and smoking and blood pressure related topics. Quality of care measures were taken from AHRQ’s Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®).
MEPS provides state-level health insurance data for employer-sponsored plans through the MEPS-Insurance Component. Beginning in 2004, MEPS-IC also provides a subset of these data for selected metropolitan areas.
The MEPS identifies persons who were uninsured for a full year, uninsured for a given point-in-time, and uninsured for a period of time during the course of a year (known as ever uninsured). In addition to the tables, query tool, and publications listed below, data on the uninsured and their utilization of health services, expenses, and previous health insurance coverage can be downloaded from data files for further analyses.
The MEPS Household Component collects some questions specific to women related to preventive care. The type of medical conditions associated with events are collected, enabling identification of conditions specific to women. In addition to the publications listed below, many of the statistical briefs and other analytical reports using MEPS-HC data include breakouts and analysis by gender.
