Overview of Emergency Department Visits Related to Injuries, by Cause of Injury, 2017

Injuries are common and can have many causes, such as falls, cuts, motor vehicle accidents, bites, poisoning, and contact with hot objects. In 2018, unintentional injuries were the leading cause of death among people ages 1 to 44 years. While severe or untreated injuries can be fatal, most are nonfatal, and many are treated in emergency departments (EDs).

The bar chart below presents statistics on ED visits related to injuries using AHRQ’s 2017 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) database, part of the agency’s Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. The chart shows the five most common types of injury and can be categorized by age, income, patient location, and sex.

Instructions: First, choose one of the four categories (age, income, patient location, or sex). Then choose a characteristic (for example, for sex, male or female). Only one category and one characteristic can be chosen at a time.
