Project Description: The proposed research has three aims:

1. Assess the differences in rate of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) use and mortality between regionalized stroke systems and non-regionalized stroke systems.
2. Assess the cost effectiveness of regionalized stroke care.
3. Determine the sensitivity and positive predictive value of prehospital identification of stroke patients in regionalized systems and non-regionalized stroke systems.

Career Goals: Dr. Govindarajan is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Emergency Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She received her medical degree at the Madras Medical College in India and did an internship in Internal Medicine at Boston University Medical Center. This was followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine also at Boston and then a fellowship in Emergency Medical Services at University of California, San Diego Medical Center. The grantee intends to establish herself as an independent clinician-scientist with an expertise in prehospital care, specifically exploring patient outcomes after prehospital interventions in patients with neurologic emergencies and the cost-effectiveness of the clinical treatments.

Progress to Date: The grantee has obtained preliminary approval for release of outcome data from the Office of Statewide Planning Development. The State of California has granted human subjects approval.
