Project Description: The proposed research has three main aims:
- Measure baseline rates of missed opportunities for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, the intervals between HPV vaccine doses and the proportion of patients who received, one, two, or three vaccinations.
- Develop and implement an health information technology (Health IT)-based intervention to reduce missed opportunities, reduce intervals between doses, and increase completion of the HPV vaccination series in inner-city practices.
- Measure post-intervention rates and analyze data.
Career Goals: Dr. Rand is an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She received her MD from the State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook School of Medicine and served her Pediatric residency at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She went on to earn her MPH from the University of Rochester School of Medicine while she was a General Academic Pediatric Fellow. She would like to develop initiatives within primary care practices that serve adolescents, to insure HPV vaccine and other preventive services are delivered optimally in the context of comprehensive primary care.
Progress to Date: The grantee spent the first year of the grant on career development activities.
Future Plans: Dr. Rand will conduct provider, parent, and adolescent qualitative interviews and the educational provider intervention to improve HPV vaccination rates. Retrospective chart reviews will be performed per Aim #1. She will continue work on manuscript preparation and complete the requirements for a graduate certificate in clinical informatics.
