Project Description: This research has three main aims:
- Build a knowledge base of patients' and providers' knowledge needs.
- Design, develop, and evaluate the usability of a scalable, widely deployable knowledge delivery service in a laboratory setting.
- Conduct a mixed-method assessment of a pilot implementation of the knowledge broker in a real-work medical home environment.
Career Goals: Dr. De Fiol is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Clinical Informatics, Department of Community and Family Medicine, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He received his MD from the University of Sao Paulo where he also did his residency in Medical Informatics. He later earned his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah. The grantee's long term career goal is to foster the widespread dissemination of knowledge management applications that improve the quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health services in the US and abroad.
Progress to Date: Work is underway on the development of the systematic review related to Aim #2.
Future Plans: The grantee will conduct focus groups and in-depth interviews with primary care providers for work associated with Aim #1. For Aim #2, he will continue to lead the development and refinement of health IT standards to support a scalable approach to knowledge integration into HER systems.
