- Patient safety.
- Health information technology.
- Comparative effectiveness.
- Prevention/care management.
- Value.
- Innovations and emerging issues.
Programs
AHRQ supports a variety of predoctoral and postdoctoral research training grant opportunities, as well as mentored and independent career development grants.
These grants:
- Foster the development of new, talented health services researchers who can contribute to improving health care for all Americans.
- Develop research capacity to meet future needs in health services research.
The links provided at http://www.ahrq.gov/funding/training-grants/index.html offer details on current emphasis areas, eligibility criteria, allowable costs, application procedures, submission dates, and Agency staff contact information.
Additionally, special emphasis notices that solicit applications on specific areas within AHRQ's mission and research portfolios are published and highlighted on AHRQ's Web site at http://www.ahrq.gov/funding/priorities-contacts/special-emphasis-notices/index.html.
Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research
AHRQ cosponsors predoctoral fellowships awards for people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Designed to ensure that diverse pools of highly trained scientists will be available for health services research, these fellowships provide up to 5 years of support for research training leading to the Ph.D. or equivalent research degree, the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree, or other combined professional or research doctoral degrees.
Dissertation Research Grants
Dissertation research funding is available for full-time students conducting doctoral-level research. These grants typically run for 1 year, with a minimum of 9 months and a maximum of 17 months of support provided.
Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships
AHRQ provides National Research Service Award fellowship grants to support postdoctoral research training. These postdoctoral fellowships provide 1 to 3 years of academic training and supervised experience in applying research methods to the systematic evaluation of health services. A stipend helps defray students' living expenses, and an allowance helps offset expenses, such as tuition and travel.
Mentored Research Scientist Development Awards
Mentored Research Scientist Development Awards foster the career development of promising new investigators who have research doctoral degrees. Eligible candidates must have mentors identified. Awards are provided for between 3 and 5 years.
Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards
Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards foster the career development of promising new clinical investigators in the field of health services research. Eligible candidates must have a clinical doctoral degree and have mentors identified. Awards are provided for between 3 and 5 years.
Independent Scientist Awards
Independent Scientist Awards provide career development support for promising new investigators in health services research. Individual awards support newly independent scientists with clinical or research doctoral degrees who can demonstrate a need for a period of intensive research focus and can commit 75 percent of their efforts to that research. Awards are provided for between 3 and 5 years.
