Tools from the Partnership in Resilience for Medication Safety Learning Lab (PROMIS Lab)
Preventable medication-related harms in ambulatory and community settings threaten patient safety. The Partnership in Resilience for Medication Safety Learning Lab (PROMIS Lab) uses a systems-engineering approach to redesign primary care work systems to address multiple types of medication-related harms.
Based at The University of Texas at Arlington and in collaboration with universities and advisors across the country and around the globe, the PROMIS Lab offers intraprofessional collaboration with older adults and their caregivers to tackle threats to medication safety including polypharmacy and inadequate patient engagement.
Among several publications, the PROMIS Lab produced the following patient education videos and a manuscript to help improve safe medication use in primary care:
- Patient education videos that describe how to collaborate with doctors and pharmacists, take medicines safely at home, learn about medicines, reading prescription labels, and more. Videos are available in both English and Spanish:
- Sample prompts for primary care healthcare professionals to use during the “5 moments of patient encounters,” which includes Rooming, Greeting, Agenda setting, Closing, and Discharging. The suggestions include scripts that provide a benefits appeal and psychological incentives, such as “Did you bring your meds?” with response “I see you are trying to be prepared; very good.” The manuscript may be accessed at https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11091807/ for more information and ideas.
