Topic: Sepsis
AHRQ provides several resources to address sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response to infection that results in tissue damage and organ failure that can lead to death. It is one of the most expensive and difficult to treat conditions in hospitals in the United States.
The fiscal year 2023 Omnibus Spending Bill directed AHRQ to develop a Report to Congress that would calculate morbidity, readmissions, and mortality related to sepsis. This report presents detailed statistics on hospital use related to sepsis and its burden on the hospital system, such as national trends in sepsis-related hospital use, deaths, and costs. It also looks at state-level and hospital-level variations in sepsis-related hospital care and outcomes. Finally, the report reviews guidelines, quality improvement resources, and initiatives for early identification and management of sepsis.
Additional AHRQ resources on sepsis include four Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project statistical briefs that provide data on inpatient stay outcomes, state variations, racial and ethnic differences, and rural and urban differences.
AHRQ also provides tools that show best practices in diagnosing and treating sepsis that promote antibiotic stewardship. For more information on Sepsis, visit Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project and Patient Safety Net (PSNet).
