Sunil Kripalani, M.D., M.Sc., SFHM, FACP, is a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He directs the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research, which supports more than 200 faculty and post-doctoral fellows through a broad portfolio of research and training programs dedicated to improving healthcare delivery and health outcomes by optimizing quality, value, equity, and patient-centered care. Dr. Kripalani is also founding director of the Center for Clinical Quality and Implementation Research, which provides a robust infrastructure for training the next generation of scientists in improvement and implementation research to address real-world challenges through a learning health system model. He previously founded and served as chief of the section of hospital medicine at Vanderbilt and continues to practice as an academic hospitalist.
Dr. Kripalani is internationally recognized for his expertise in improving transitions of care for hospital patients, with a focus on health literacy, social determinants of health, care coordination, and medication safety. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, as well as toolkits for evidence-based practice, which have been disseminated nationally by AHRQ. He served as a longstanding member (2015–2022) and chair (2019–2022) of the AHRQ Healthcare Effectiveness and Outcomes Research study section.
Dr. Kripalani graduated from Rice University, received his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, and trained in internal medicine at Emory University, where he also completed a hospital medicine fellowship and a Master of Science in clinical research. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a senior fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine.
