Mary Beth Flynn Makic, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., C.C.N.S., FAAN, FNAP, FCNS, is a professor and specialty director of the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Program at the University of Colorado College of Nursing. She is a research scientist at Denver Health and Hospital Authority and previously held the position of research nurse scientist, critical care, at the University of Colorado Hospital.
Dr. Makic has been a critical care clinician and clinical nurse specialist for more than 36 years and is well recognized as a leader in critical care. The focus of Dr. Makic’s research is creation of interprofessional initiatives to advance the translation and sustained adoption of science into practice. She is well known for her work to advance independent nursing practice based on current best evidence to promote clinical innovations that enhance patient outcomes. Dr. Makic has authored over 110 journal publications and 70 book chapters and is the editor of several highly acclaimed textbooks. She is frequently sought as a keynote speaker to address strategies for overcoming barriers to evidence-based adoption, integration, and sustainment within organizations. Among her many honors are fellowships in the American Academy of Nursing, the National Academies of Practice, and the Clinical Nurse Specialist Institute.
Dr. Makic recently completed a three-year term on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors and has been chair of the AACN Clinical Advisory Work Group. She is co-chair of the research and Evidence-Based Practice committee for the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and is an active member on the acute and critical care expert panel with the American Academy of Nursing. Makic earned a Ph.D. in nursing at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, a Master of Science in nursing at University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from University of Wisconsin, Madison.
