Person-Centered Preventive Healthcare: Gathering Stakeholder Input on Evidence and Implementation
Clinical preventive services (CPS), such as vaccinations and screening tests, can help individuals live longer, healthier lives. But many people, especially people with low incomes or from ethnic or racial minority groups, aren't getting the CPS they need. At the same time, other people get CPS that have no benefit or even cause harm. This project aimed to identify high-priority CPS, explore new ways to deliver equitable, person-centered CPS, and identify strategies to reduce disparities.
The 22-month project convened a 25-member stakeholder panel to advise on the project, conducted environmental scans and key informant interviews, and convened technical expert panel meetings on the following eight topics:
- Identifying high-priority, person-centered CPS for adults age 35 and over.
- Using telehealth, mHealth, and/or other technologies to support patient-centered CPS.
- Using innovative models of delivering patient-centered CPS.
- Linking primary care and public health to enhance and integrate the delivery of CPS.
- Identifying and reducing disparities in the delivery of CPS.
- Stopping the delivery of CPS that may cause more harm than benefit.
- Reaching adolescent populations to deliver preventive services.
- Engaging in challenging conversations to assess risk and deliver preventive services.
Findings from these activities were summarized in four reports.
Prioritizing Clinical Preventive Services
This report summarizes findings from a modified Delphi process used to update a list of high-priority clinical preventive services. The panel also highlighted potential uses for the list along with concerns relating to its use. Access the Executive Summary (PDF, 505 KB) and Final Report (PDF, 2 MB).
Gathering Stakeholder Input on Evidence and Implementation
This report synthesizes findings across five of the topics and identifies three overarching themes: a need to transition to holistic healthcare delivery and financing models; the importance of the inclusion of community and patient voices in healthcare system design; and leveraging technology to improve preventive care delivery. Access the Executive Summary (PDF, 604 KB) and Final Report (PDF, 2 MB).
Reaching Adolescents To Deliver Preventive Services
This report identifies four themes: preventive services in the context of adolescent development and health behaviors; improving delivery of preventive services in traditional primary care; parental engagement and inclusion; and reaching adolescents beyond primary care. Access the Final Report (PDF, 981 KB).
Engaging in Challenging Conversations about Screening
This report identifies strategies to support difficult conversations about stopping screening services with individuals who may be unlikely to benefit. Strategies include those at the patient-provider and system level and potential approaches outside of the healthcare system. Access the Final Report (PDF, 1 MB).
