Implementing TeamSTEPPS 3.0 in an Organization or Unit
The primary users of this Implementation section will be individuals or teams responsible for implementing and sustaining the use of TeamSTEPPS concepts or tools within an organization or unit and people equipping them with needed resources. The first part of this section includes guidance for how to assess the short- and long-term impact of TeamSTEPPS 3.0; this part may also be useful for TeamSTEPPS trainers. Materials in the coaching discussion may benefit individuals supporting colleagues less familiar with TeamSTEPPS 3.0 and those overseeing implementation activities.
The implementation concepts and tools are relevant to all healthcare organizations; specific tips related to particular settings or staff groups are also included. If TeamSTEPPS is being implemented on a smaller scale (e.g., only a small number of TeamSTEPPS tools or only in a specific unit), you may want to simplify the implementation activities recommended in this implementation section.
This implementation section begins with an explanation of key implementation phases and activities. It is followed by guidance for how to teach this implementation section that may be of primary interest to trainers.
TeamSTEPPS 3.0 is not a solution to all the problems in an organization or unit. If problems include major staffing shortages, disengaged leadership, financial difficulties, or other structural or cultural obstacles, TeamSTEPPS training is unlikely to bring positive, sustainable changes. However, TeamSTEPPS can be a valuable part of an overall strategy to enhance patient safety and employee and organizational well-being.
