Mini-Session Training Content
If you are teaching content from the Communication Module in an even shorter format, focus on one or two specific communication tools or an important communication concept that has been selected based on the needs of the participants. For this format, do the following:
- Using the overall TeamSTEPPS diagram (Slide 4), explain what TeamSTEPPS is and that the TeamSTEPPS website contains dozens of useful tools and other valuable content that participants can access on their own.
- Note that one of the four key TeamSTEPPS skills is communication (using Slide 4) and provide a brief explanation of its importance and meaning (Slides 5-6).
- At some point during your training, stress that tools are helpful but that organizations also need to commit to creating a safety culture that will support their use.
- Select whichever communication tools or concepts you plan to train on and use the slides for those tools in your training. If you focus on a specific tool, there may be other examples, videos, or exercises related to the tool in section 2 of the Communication Module.
- Consider using one of the three TeamSTEPPS patient stories that directly address a specific communication concept or tool as part of, or even the focus of, your short training.
Even if the training is focused, sustaining the use of any tools will depend on reinforcement. Staff meetings, team huddles, email messages, and other communication methods can be used to reinforce the use of tools and their benefits to both staff and patients.
