Mini-Session Training Content
If you teach content from the Situation Monitoring Module in an even shorter format, focus on one or two specific situation monitoring tools that have been selected based on the participants’ needs. For this format, we recommend that you do the following:
- Using the overall TeamSTEPPS diagram (Slide 5), explain what TeamSTEPPS is and that the TeamSTEPPS website contains dozens of useful tools and other valuable content participants can access on their own.
- Note that one of the four key TeamSTEPPS skills is situation monitoring (also using Slide 5) and provide a short explanation of how situation monitoring supports situation awareness and shared mental models for teams (Slide 6).
- Note that STEP calls attention to four key dimensions teams should monitor to ensure a shared mental model and safe patient care (Slide 15).
- At some point during your training, stress that tools are helpful but that organizations also need to commit to creating a safety culture that will support their use.
- Select whichever specific situation monitoring tools you plan to teach and use the slides for those tools in your training. If you focus on a specific tool, you may want to add other examples, videos, or exercises related to the tool in section 2 of the Situation Monitoring curriculum..
- You may choose to use the TeamSTEPPS Video Simulation Training Unit for Situation Monitoring. This unit includes:
- Short video segments that introduce a situation monitoring scenario, show the scenario, and recap the scenario.
- A Facilitator’s Guide to support leaders without an extensive simulation or TeamSTEPPS background in leading the training exercise.
- Classroom slides to guide trainees through the exercise.
- A participant worksheet to capture trainees' observations as they view the scenario.
Even if the training is very focused, sustaining the use of any tools depends on reinforcement. Staff meetings, team huddles, email messaging, and other communication methods should be used to reinforce the use of tools and their benefits to both staff and patients.
