This poster educates and motivates staff to follow evidence-based CAUTI prevention practices in three domains: appropriate catheter use, proper insertion and maintenance, and prompt catheter removal. The three domains are depicted in a circle, with topic areas within each domain presented like pie pieces. Within each topic area are tips and illustrative graphic elements. Topic areas in appropriate catheter use are alternatives and indications. Under proper insertion and maintenance are insertion, securement, drainage bag, and hygiene. Under prompt catheter removal are review for need and families. Surrounding the wheel are several facts about healthcare-associated infections and CAUTIs. Healthcare-associated infections are a significant cause of illness, death, and excess cost in all health care settings. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are among the most common HAIs in the United States. At any given time, HAIs affect 1 out of every 20 hospital patients. By taking these steps, your hospital can eliminate CAUTI and make care safer for patients. Your unit team can make sure the steps are done consistently through audits, observations, and assessments.
