Overview of Quality Improvement Study Components
A systematic approach to quality improvement work greatly increases the odds of achieving the desired outcomes of a given project. Adherence to a standardized framework ensures that all essential elements of a project are completed in the proper sequence to facilitate progression from a simple idea to sustainable change and, ultimately, better outcomes for patients. To this end, several tools have been created to assist in the development, execution, and evaluation of a quality improvement study. Tool: Quality Improvement Study Framework
Use this document to outline the elements of a quality improvement (QI) study. These 12 elements support the plan, develop, execute, and evaluate phases essential to QI work. This framework provides detailed points of consideration to be incorporated into each element of the study and can be used as a guide when populating the Quality Improvement Study Blank Template.
Tool: Quality Improvement Study Debrief Example
This tool includes a tutorial to assist in the development and execution of a QI study. While this example specifically focuses on the use of a debrief as a means to enhance the use of the surgical safety checklist, all of the essential QI study elements are found in this tool and can be replicated based on your center’s QI focus. This tutorial has three components: audio, facilitator notes, and a PowerPoint presentation. These components will provide an interactive guide to demonstrate the development and execution of a QI study.
