Tools and Resources To Help Hospitals Implement an ISCR Program

Engagement and Development of Your ISCR Pathway

This part of the implementation phase is critical to spend time on because it is the foundation of your Improving Surgical Care and Recovery (ISCR) program. The Implementation Guide is detailed, describing development through sustainment of a pathway, and has links to the core Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program toolkit.

Tools in this section will help identify and engage local and hospital leaders and frontline staff.

ISCR Patient Education Booklets

The booklets are patient-centered with content, graphics, and layouts vetted by patients to ensure that the materials are useful. Each booklet covers what patients and families need to know or do in the month leading up to surgery (or just before emergency procedures) through recovery at home. Booklets have space for hospital and surgical team information. The booklets are intended for adult patients, although some of the booklets cover surgery also performed on younger patients.

The ISCR Pathway and Evidence

A pathway worksheet and checklist explain what components of the enhanced recovery pathway are done during the operative stages (pre-op area, immediate pre-op, intra-, and post-op) in the hospital. These components are supported by published technical evidence reviews for the different service lines.
