CUSP and MRSA Prevention
The 4 Es framework identifies four important elements when implementing patient safety interventions: Engage, Educate, Execute, and Evaluate.
Engaging people encourages open communication, active participation, and empowerment. Engaged individuals are more likely to identify safety issues, contribute to improvements, and follow through on patient safety efforts.
Educating people raises awareness of patient safety issues and ensures that they are equipped with the technical knowledge and skills to implement solutions.
Execution refers to the step of putting plans into action. This isn’t a single event – execution involves identifying and addressing barriers, adjusting your approach, and learning from mistakes. The overarching guideline here is to make it easy for people to do the right thing.
Evaluation is the ongoing process of monitoring and assessing interventions. This includes defining your process and outcome metrics, assessing and collecting data, evaluating progress and challenges, and then broadly sharing the result.

CUSP Tools & Other Resources
CUSP Resource: CUSP Tip Sheet: Assembling the CUSP Team (DOCX, 397 KB)
A guidance document on assembling an effective CUSP team. When assembling the team, it is important to identify key team members who understand their role and are actively involved.
CUSP Resource: CUSP Tip Sheet: Engaging Senior Leaders in MRSA Prevention (DOCX, 399 KB)
A guidance document on engaging senior leadership. Senior leaders play an essential role in building engagement and their support can have a dramatic impact on interventions.
CUSP Resource: CUSP Tip Sheet: Engaging Staff in MRSA Prevention (DOCX, 399 KB)
A guidance document on engaging frontline staff beyond the CUSP team. In order to be successful, the CUSP team must motivate, engage, and harness the knowledge of all staff – this is critical to ensure sustained positive outcomes.
CUSP Resource: CUSP Tip Sheet: Engaging Physicians in MRSA Prevention (DOCX, 399 KB)
A guidance document on engaging physicians. Physicians play vital roles in any undertaking to improve quality and patient safety. Engaging and involving physicians fully in MRSA prevention efforts will be very impactful.
